The MGL50 “Purple Circuit” is the updated incarnation of the “MGL50 V2”. A versatile 50w 2- channel master volume amp that will cover many tones from ‘70’s classic rock to ‘80’s rock & metal. The hybrid Purple Circuit combines tones from “Plexi”, “Metal Panel” & “JCM” era amps that we all love. From the smooth and sweet distorted tones of a decked Plexi to the attitude & aggressiveness of a hot-rodded JCM.
After many customer inquiries, a foot switchable cleaner channel with a separate master volume has been added. The tone controls and preamp settings are shared with both channels. This is very similar to plugging into the low sensitivity input jack of a 2204. Channel switching can also be done with the mini switch next to the foot switch jack. An alternative to the cleaner channel is to have the 2nd master as a lead boost for the dirty channel. Customer can make the choice at the time of order. The other added feature is a “Jose” style Saturation - Clipping circuit that can be engaged with a mini switch on the back panel. With the Saturation circuit engaged, the amp has a more compressed feel with more gain to replicate a cranked vintage amp.
Some quick build notes: Plexi ingredients added with the use of NOS Philips mustard caps in strategic positions of the circuit for authentic voicing along with a period correct custom paper layer wound 784-139 output transformer. The power section uses an MGL custom wound Dagnall power transformer and choke.
All amps are built to order in-house with hand wired turret board construction, include NOS tubes and a Metropoulos “Zero Loss” effects loop w/ true bypass switch.
PRICE $2,695.00
BUILD SPECS:
Mini Switches, Front Panel
The mini switch on the front panel between the Master & Pre-amp knobs that’s labeled MOD & VIN, allows you to switch between 2 different bias values for the first preamp tube. The up “MOD” for Modern position is stock “Metal Panel” thru “JCM” and is tight and focused with a slight bump in the mids. In the down “VIN” for Vintage position, it’s a Plexi value that’s smooth and creamy with a little more gain.
The mini switch to the left of the “FS” foot switch jack labeled HI & LO can be used to switch between the HI & LO Master Volumes when no foot switch is plugged in.
Mini Switches, Back Panel
The mini switch on the back panel labeled “Voicing” determines the amount of negative feedback in the circuit. In the “Classic” position (switch down), you get more negative feedback which will be a little darker, sweeter and more compressed(more plexi like in tone & feel). In the “Modern” position (switch up), you get a more up front & aggressive tone with a little tighter bottom end.
The mini switch on the back panel to the left of the white speaker jacks labeled “SAT” is to engage the saturation-Clipping circuit, up in ON and down is off.
The mini switch to the left of the FX loop is a true bypass, so in the off position, the loop has no effect on the amp circuit.
